Te Hono

Te Hono, New Plymouth Airport Terminal, emerges as an inhabited landform, translating earth rising toward sky through a stepped roofscape. From a landscaped mound, the repetitive roof geometry increases in height between the concourse entries, café and principal public spaces, before descending toward the sea. The sectional sequence frames northern views, draws landscape into the terminal and expresses the passenger journey.

To the south, the curved public concourse addresses the mountain with a sweeping gesture of arrival, echoed on the airside elevation. Together, siting, section and structure establish an intuitive circulation sequence and a distinctive civic gateway for Taranaki. Graham Crust led the design of this multi-award-winning terminal as Lead Architect and multidisciplinary project director during his tenure at Beca Ltd.
